VINTAGE Chine Kwan Yin Lotus Goddess of Mercy Porcelain Figurine unmarked. 6 inch long (20cm) Condition is "Used".Shipped with USPS Priority Mail.
Given to me by my ex husband's grandmother. This is a porcelain figurine and it is very old. c 1900 - 1949 at best guess There are a lot of newer ones listed. This goddess figurine is depicted holding a lotus plant, symbol of purity and divinity. She is wearing her characteristic flowing white robes. In Chinese Buddhism, Guan Yin is the Goddess of mercy, compassion, kindness and love.
Her name translates to "the one who hears the cries of the world." This rare collectible version is referred to by some as the "Wish Fulfilling Quan Yin" which was created with a REMOVEABLE hand to allow one to submit a wish by removing the hand and placing the wish into the statue. I cannot find markings on the bottom. She is perfect and does have her wish hand in place but it is removeable so you can place the wish in her hand.
This porcelain figure of Guan Yin is perfectly white, clean and in mint condition. From the Ming period porcelain objects were manufactured that achieved a fusion of glaze and body traditionally referred to as "ivory white" and "milk white." The special characteristic of Dehua porcelain is the very small amount of iron oxide in it, allowing it to be fired in an oxidising atmosphere to a warm white or pale ivory color. This color makes it instantly recognizable and quite different from the porcelain from the Imperial kilns of Jingdezhen, which contains more iron and has to be fired in reduction (i.e., an atmosphere with carbon monoxide) if it is not to appear an unpleasant straw color. She is in near MINT condition. Other than a little something i saw but i dont know what to call it. Look at picture.
It is a wonderful homage to this kind Goddess and very rare to find one in such great condition.
I will pack her carefully for her travels.
