Note: D-170 is my inventory # only.Description update 25Jan21 in response to a question:
I checked these and ran the nut the full length of travel and there are no burrs, it rotates freely throughout the range. The spring is stiff up until you open these to about 2-3/4" wide point to point on a rule. There doesn't seem to be any spring tension from 2-3/4" to the full 3" opening range. I think this is how these were made honestly, but also it could be some reduced spring tension at the end of the travel range. If you only plan to use these out to the opening of 2-3/4" (5-1/2" circle) then they would be perfect.
Here is a
used vintage pair of Lufkin (Saginaw, Mich. USA) No. 40 "Banner" spring divider caliper in the 3" size. This pair has a solid nut and flat legs.
They work great and there are no owner engravings on them. They have a nice older patina with just a few stain spots from age. Nice handy size for the home machine shop, hobbyist, toolmaker or fabricator.
