Description
As I type this, there are 7 HP 4815A RF Vector Impedance Meters on eBay. Some have clearly spent far too long in a swamp. Some have been cannibalized. A couple might be serviceable. Aside from that, not one is usable since none have the all important "PROBE".This offering is in excellent condition electrically, mechanically, and cosmetically. It includes the essential probe and it has been thoroughly tested. To see
it in operation Google: Jt10f8QA1Lo and my YouTube video will come up.
That said, it is NOT perfect. These instruments have a genetic flaw: a variable capacitor that uses an oil dielectric. Some actually leak oil. This unit does NOT. See pictures 4 and 5. But what happens is the internal oscillator quits at the low end of the upper 2 frequency ranges. This appears to be due to a change in the dielectric loss of the oil. For this instrument (sn1606A03086) the 14-35 MHz range covers 13.7 to 37.4 MHz and the 35 to 108 covers 37.4 to 108. The point being that the upper range does not go down to 35 MHz, BUT the range below it does cover 35 to 37.4 so there is no gap in the frequency coverage. If this flaw is a showstopper for you PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE!

hp 4815a oscillator . The 1st hit should be from Conrad Hoffman who did a great job documenting his journey.
The HP Service Department was apparently aware of this problem.
