    Description

Beautiful Chinese figurine featuring a Bactrian (two hump) camel designed in the Tang Dynasty style with sancai glazing (traditional triple color drip glaze) so favored in the Tang time period. These camels were frequently seen along the Silk Road for the bustling import/export business at that time.  The figurines were made to be placed in interment with the deceased to be a symbol of their wealth.  The saddle carries the masks of snarling animals to ward off evil.  Many reproductions of the burial camel were made for the tourist trade. I do not know the age of this piece, but I am guessing 20th century.  The only makers mark is a 33 on the bottom.  It is in excellent condition; no chips or breakage.  There is a firing fissure along his neck which was made during the glazing and firing process and is not considered a flaw (see the last two photos for reference).  This figurine is large, standing 12" tall and is 9" long and aprox. 7" wide.  A fine piece of art pottery, a showcase piece for your desk, library or office, or coffee table.
